Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) will open its 2013-14 season on Friday, November 15 with Purlie, a Tony Award-winning musical version of the play Purlie Victorious. The cast features 16 actors, running the gamut from familiar Troupe members to many first timers on the WBTT stage. Earle Dean Wilson, one of the first Troupe members, will enjoy his first WBTT starring role as Purlie. Earley has been mentored by Founding Director Nate Jacobs since the age of 8 and has most recently been working nationally with Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, Tennessee. The show also features WBTT favorite Ariel Blue as Missy and two new guest artists Gia McGlone as Luttiebelle, who just finished the national tour of DreamGirls, and Emmanuel Cadet who plays Gitlow. The show will run until Sunday, December 15. Showtimes are Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8:00 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00. Two Saturday matinees have been added to the schedule on December 7th and December 14th. Tickets are $28.50 for individual tickets and may be purchased online at www.wbttsrq.org or by calling the box office at 941-366-1505. Subscriptions are still available for the season and include four shows for $80. The WBTT theater is located at 1646 10th Way in Sarasota.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) announces that they will be holding auditions for their 2013-14 main season on Saturday, September 7th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, with call backs being held that evening from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Auditions will be held at the theater located at 1646 10th Way in Sarasota. No prior theatrical experience is required but actors should be 18 years of age or older. All ethnicities are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested in auditioning for musical theater should come prepared with a 16-bar song and a one-minute monologue. An accompanist will be provided so please bring your own sheet music. Actor auditions for straight plays should prepare two contrasting monologues. Call backs for musical theater will be given an additional song selected by WBTT.

Members of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) have just returned from performing Soul Crooners at the National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF) in Winston-Salem, NC. The all- male ensemble and WBTT musicians had four scheduled performances, each of which were sold out. It was the first time the Troupe had been invited to the Festival, which is the most important showcase for African-American performers in America.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) is bringing back Sammy Tonight! A Tribute to Sammy Davis, Jr., a runaway hit from the 2012 season. The musical revue features De’Zhon Fields who has traveled the world showcasing the legendary icon. Those who were unable to get tickets to the sold out performances and those who may want to enjoy it again can see the show during its summer production, which opens Wednesday, August 21st and runs through Sunday, September 1st. Evening performances run Tuesday through Saturday at 8:00 pm. Matinees are at 2:00 pm on Sundays. Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) is pleased to announce that the Best of Stevie Wonder will open the summer season on Wednesday, July 17th and run for eleven performances through Sunday July 28th. The show is an original musical revue, written and adapted by Nate Jacobs, WBTT’s founding artistic director. The Best of Stevie Wonder will be presented at the WBTT theater, 1626 10th Way in Sarasota. Show days and times are Tuesday-Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm. The Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe is very pleased to announce that it has been invited to perform its original musical revue Soul Crooners at the 2013 National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The biennial Festival will be held this summer from July 29th -August 3rd. Soul Crooners will be performed four times, twice on Friday, August 2st and twice on Saturday, August 3rd. This is the first time a WBTT production has been invited to perform, although Artistic Director Nate Jacobs has presented Aunt Rudele at the festival, to great acclaim.
